Construction of
the General Arnold began in the fall of 2004. She was completed
and launched on May22, 2005. Plans for the General Arnold were
lifted by Howard Chapelle of the Smithsonian Institution in the 1930's
from a "Cape Ann Dory."
The hull of the General Arnold is built from clear white pine, with her frames formed from white oak. Her sweeps, or oars, are made for Ash because of that wood's strength and flexibility. Spars for the General Arnold's rig are of Norwegian Spruce. One of the many guides used during construction was John Gardners' "The Dory Book". This resource is a must for anyone contemplating the construction of a dory.
